There is an urge to focus on representational painting and to make it the metaphorical target and objective of our gaze. This urge strengthens our role as viewers or at least makes us aware of that role, and it can be the basis for a strategy that alternates polar extremes. Strange as it seems, clarity about what we must view, both because it draws our gaze and is where that gaze comes to rest, is followed by efforts to flee or hide, to look in order not to see, or to recognize in order not to grasp.
